Elon Musk makes ‘Saturday Night Live’ hosting debut with Dogecoin quip
Tech giant Elon Musk made his highly-anticipated Saturday Night Live hosting debut next to Miley Cyrus, claiming he made history as the first host for the NBCUniversal comedy show to have Asperger’s syndrome.
First-time host Elon Musk talks about why he loves Saturday Night Live and shares what he was like as a kid.
The billionaire began his monologue by addressing an audience in more than 100 countries about how he is “the first person with Asperger’s to host SNL. At least the first to admit it.” Musk also took jibes at himself, saying “I’m pretty good at running human in emulation mode.”

The Tesla CEO made self-deprecating jokes throughout the show, including his weakness for making contentious tweets and the one-time he smoked a joint on a podcast.

“To anyone I’ve offended I just want to say, I reinvented electric cars and send people to Mars on a rocket ship. Did you think I would be a Joe normal dude?”

The tech mogul’s mother, Mae, also soon hopped up on stage next to him as they quipped about Dogecoin, the cryptocurrency Musk has touted.

His SNL appearance unleashed a wave of excitement amongst investors in cryptocurrencies, including Dogecoin, a digital currency with a shiba inu dog as its avatar. Dogecoin prices had surged ahead of Musk’s television appearance.
Dogecoin suffers huge price drop during Elon Musk’s SNL appearance
The “Dogefather” Elon Musk’s SNL appearance didn’t inspire the price hike many hoped for.
In spite of hopes from Dogecoin believers, Elon Musk’s appearance on Saturday Night Live this weekend didn’t take Dogecoin “to the moon.” On the contrary, the price dropped significantly.

In the days and weeks leading up to Musk’s much-anticipated gig as SNL host, Dogecoin began rising heavily. In January, Dogecoin was priced at around 1 cent. Just last week a single Dogecoin was worth over 70 cents.
Some of that dramatic rise was thanks to Elon Musk. In 2021, Musk began tweeting about Dogecoin, becoming its highest-profile supporter and helping drive an increased price for the cryptocurrency. It’s impossible to attribute the recent Dogecoin price increase solely to Musk’s scheduled appearance on SNL, but many seemed to be buying the cryptocurrency in anticipation of a possible Dogecoin name drop during his opening monologue.

And Dogecoin name drops did occur.

But given the nature of cryptocurrency, the Dogecoin price could bounce back next week.
Elon Musk reveals he has Asperger’s syndrome during SNL monologue: Watch it here
Elon Musk is hardly a natural comedian, but he gave it a shot when he hosted Saturday Night Live, delivering the traditional opening monologue. After an cold open where Miley Cyrus sang and SNL cast members joked with their moms for Mother’s Day, the Tesla and SpaceX CEO stepped up to the plate.

Dressed in all black, he told a friendly audience that he’s the first SNL host with Asperger’s syndrome, “or at least the first to admit it.” Dan Aykroyd, who hosted in 2003 long after leaving the cast, also has Asperger’s syndrome.
Asperger’s syndrome, or AS, is one of a group of neurological disorders known as autism spectrum disorders. AS is considered to be on the mild end of the spectrum. As CNET sister site Healthline notes, people with AS often have difficulty with social interaction, engage in repetitive behavior, stand firm in what they think, and focus on rules and routines. Often, those diagnosed with the disorder have normal or above normal intelligence.

In keeping with the Mother’s Day theme, Musk brought out his mother, model Maye Musk.

“I’m excited for my Mother’s Day gift, I just hope it’s not Dogecoin,” Maye Musk told her son. Elon Musk has prominently joked about Dogecoin, even calling himself “the Dogefather.”

“It is,” he replied.

The billionaire businessman’s monologue didn’t ignore many of the things that made him pop-culture famous outside of his businesses, joking about how he took a puff of marijuana on Joe Rogan’s podcast in 2018. One of his best jokes focused on the unusual name of his son. Musk and musician Grimes named their child X Æ A-12, which Musk joked “is pronounced, ‘cat running across keyboard.'” (Musk really pronounces it X Ash A Twelve, he has said.)

“Look, I know I sometimes say or post strange things, but that’s just how my brain works,” he said. “To anyone I’ve offended, I just want to say, I reinvented electric cars and I’m sending people to Mars in a rocket ship. Did you think I was also going to be a chill, normal dude?”

Musk also joked about past SNL hosts, mentioning NFL star O.J. Simpson, saying “he killed it.” Yeesh, but yes, Simpson did host back in 1978, long before his infamous murder trial.

Musk also touched on his own terrible Twitter instincts, pointing out a tweet where he posted “69 days after 4/20 again haha.”

“I don’t know, I thought it was funny,” he said. “That’s why I wrote ‘haha’ at the end.”
