It was just a pile of dirt before the #SpaceX South Texas launch facility on South Padre Island near Boca Chica supported crazy test launches of the #Starship spaceflight programme.

So how things started? Contractors brought in truck after truck of soil, resulting in a massive mesa of over 300,000 cubic yards of earth. That’s a lot of Olympic-sized swimming pools, though you probably wouldn’t want to swim in them. After nearly two years, they hauled the majority of the soil away from the site for disposal. It may appear to be an odd way to begin a construction project, but foundations are critical. This is true for highways, bridges, pipelines, dams, skyscrapers, and even futuristic rocket launch facilities.
As we know, Texas coastline is not known for its excellent soil properties, engineers were required to specify some additional work before the buildings, tanks, and launchpads could be built. The construction of that massive dirt pile was a clever way to keep these facilities from sinking into the ground over time.
